Some Unconventional (and Great!) Advice for Planning a Company Holiday Party

Warning: this article might cause some Event Planners to raise an eyebrow or make a slightly frowny face – because we have a few ideas that might buck the “ordinary” trend. But who wants to plan an ordinary party when you could create something extraordinary?!

So, traditionally speaking, event planners usually start by determining event details in the following order…

  1. Pick the Event Date and Times
  2. Choose the Venue
  3. Decide on the Food & Beverage
  4. Choose the Entertainment

Again, event planners typically tackle corporate event planning in the above order. After all, it makes sense to know the WHEN and WHERE you are going to have the event before you can plan what to eat, drink – and do during the event!

But unfortunately oftentimes there isn’t enough thought given to what the participants are actually going to DO during the event beyond drinking cocktails and eating (and talking to one another).

If you think about it, choosing the activities later in the planning sequence is probably a major reason that so many corporate holiday events end up being a bit stale and BORING.

Ask yourself, doesn’t it make more sense to figure out what will engage your group and ensure that your participants actually have a great time - and then pick a venue that will lend itself to that program?

Think back to the events that you’ve enjoyed the most. What sticks out about the experience? Do you remember the décor? The centerpieces? The food? The conversation? Or do you remember that you had a lot of FUN?!

If it’s the fun you remember (and we’re betting that’s exactly what you remember!), chances are you were involved in some type of interactive experience that made it memorable. Maybe you were dancing at a wedding – or you were playing at a game night – or answering trivia questions in a game show. Chances are you weren’t just sitting and talking to the person next to you!

So why not approach the event planning for your next party by first considering some fun activities – and then deciding on a venue that lends itself to your group having FUN!!
