Top 10 Best Team Building Activities for Engineers

Whether you have a group of sales people, teachers, attorneys - or engineers, one constant remains the same - and that is the importance of building connections with co-workers. It really is vital to the structure of every team.

But we all know that engineers are a bit of a special breed. While creativity and interaction are important, engineers also need to have their brains challenged and stimulated in a variety of ways. With this in mind, we have cultivated a list of the top ten team building activities specifically for engineers.

1. Flugtag

You can skip the Google Translate for this one. We'll tell you - it means “Flying Day”!  All you really need to know for the Flugtag event is that you and your employees will have loads of fun building your own airplanes. Each team receives all the necessary supplies and tools to build and launch your planes into the sky!

Once your plane is ready to launch, your team will stand at one end of the tarmac - and let her rip!  Some planes travel over fifty feet. Others aren't quite as successful. But don't worry. If your plane crashes instantly, there's still an opportunity to redeem yourselves since the judging criteria includes more than distance. You can also earn points for style and we'll even let you wager on where you think your pilot (action figure) will land in case he is ejected mid-flight.

2. LEGO Build

Whether you're a LEGO aficionado or if LEGO are just those things you accidentally (and painfully) step on in your kid's room, no worries because everyone can embrace their inner kid with our LEGO Build activity. All teams start with LEGO bricks in multiple shapes, sizes and colors. We'll start you off easy and have your team complete a few short challenges, such as building the widest bridge or tallest tower.

Then we give each team a photograph of a world-famous landmark to replicate using your LEGO. Teams also compete to win a variety of other building supplies like cotton balls, Q-tips, pipe cleaners, etc. that you can use to enhance your structures.

Once you finish your masterpiece, each team's spokesperson makes a short presentation to enlighten the group about your world-famous landmark, with extra points for how ridiculous you can make your “fun facts.”  Teams then vote for their favorite creation and best presentation - and the winners are announced.

3. Room Escape

Whether you have a group of 10 or 300 people, there are several different Room Escape options to engage your entire group at the same time…

  • Standard Escape Room: Ideal for up to 15 people, we bring supplies to a conference room as you all work together to solve clues and puzzles, eventually unlocking the final lockbox.
  • Table Top Escape: For larger groups that need to remain in one room, we divide the group into teams with each team seated at a table. You'll be told that a convict has escaped from a maximum security penitentiary, and he's left a trail behind. Teams race against one another to solve each clue and try to be the first to discover his whereabouts!
  • Great Hotel Escape: This version is great for large groups who want to get up and move around their work campus or hotel. Teams solve a variety of clues that take them to different rooms, lawns, cafes, etc., where they'll participate in a quick challenge before receiving their next clue. Teams earn points for speed and for doing well in each of the challenges.

4. Michael-CAN-gelo

Your mom told you not to play with your food when you were a kid. But what about when you're a grown up? She probably wouldn't mind if she saw you participating in the Michael-CAN-gelo event.

This program is similar to the LEGO Build - with each team creating a replica of a world-famous landmark - but instead of building with LEGO, each team builds with hundreds of CANNED GOODS.

The finished structures look amazing - and ultimately everyone feels like a winner when the cans are donated to a local food bank at the conclusion of the event.

5. MacGyver

The fate of the world rests in your hands! And all you have is a roll of duct tape and some other random items we found around the office. Oh, and your creativity!

The Macgyver program is fantastic for engineers, as each team is given a crisis that they must solve. They'll build contraptions to safeguard the world from impending doom - and they'll present their solutions to the judges before they vote on which team has out-MacGyvered the others.

6. Chain Reaction

It's fair to say we've all seen at least one chain reaction (Rube Goldberg) machine, but have you ever tried to make your own?! In Chain Reaction, you get to be the mastermind this time as your team works together to build a machine to accomplish a random task assigned at the beginning of the event. While we can't promise a viral video, we can promise lots of smiles as you and your team put your creativity to work.

7. PuzzleMania

If your team loves puzzles but is short on time or your setting isn't conducive to an escape room, our PuzzleMania activity is a great solution.

Teams are seated at tables and they race against each other to solve as many puzzles as possible. You must complete a puzzle before moving on to the next, and we'll give you a puzzle piece after completing each round. Then, all the teams work together to assemble all the puzzle pieces to complete the final task.

8. Water Works

Your group will put their engineering skills to great use as they build water filtration systems for remote villages and refugee camps in Uganda. With the Water Works program, teams build portable, emergency water filtration devices. For every portable device you build, our NGO partners in Uganda will match your donation one-for-one with larger, household water systems.

You'll also create artwork to decorate the household systems - and each artwork contains a tracking system so you'll actually see the artwork on each system along with the families who receive them after the event. This is an incredibly impactful and 100% transparent charitable give-back program

9. Fast & Furious

Did you ever think you'd use your engineering degree to build a Tinker Toy car? Our Fast & Furious activity is a great way to embrace the F1 fanatic in all of us as you try to build the fastest tinker toy car on the lot. Each team receives identical supplies to use to design and create a race car that will zoom down a 36-foot incline track.

We will run a series of heats before the fastest car takes the prize!

10. Virtual Option: Legends of the Hidden Temple

Given that the founders of our company were the original temple guards on the iconic and incredible cult-hit TV show Legends of the Hidden Temple, we've created a virtual version of the event so you and your team can relive your childhoods on a different type of screen. But don't worry, if you're not familiar with the TV show, you'll still have a great time solving the puzzles, deciphering the clues and escaping the virtual rooms. Be careful, though — there are plenty of twists and turns to keep you on your toes until the very end!
